As president, Sara inspires clients, partners and staff to continuously learn, grow and innovate. Her strategic vision keeps Paulsen on the leading edge of ag marketing thought, digital and creative leadership.
Prior to taking over the agency reins, Sara was vice president of digital services. She joined Paulsen as a graphic designer in 1991. Sara is a graduate of the University of South Dakota and was raised on a row-crop and livestock farm in southeastern South Dakota. Because she doesn’t have enough on her plate, she and her husband also own and operate a rural bed-and-breakfast.
Executive VP, Industry Analyst
An award-winning marketer and account leader, Greg brings a wealth of agriculture and rural lifestyle expertise to our clients. His commitment to outstanding client service and results-driven marketing have made Paulsen the business it is today. He cannot be stumped by any question about agriculture; we’ve tried.
Greg was president of Paulsen from 2008-2014. Prior to joining Paulsen as an account supervisor in 1995, Greg owned Gregory Scott Communications. He was an account executive at Lawrence & Schiller Advertising in Sioux Falls and Martin Williams in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Greg holds a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He was recognized as the 2012 Marketer of the Year by the National Agri-Marketing Association and received the Silver Medal from the South Dakota Advertising Federation in 1996.
VP, Strategic Director
Mark is the driving force behind Paulsen’s strategic planning, research and marketing capabilities. His extensive background in strategy development and management gives him a unique edge in helping clients identify and solve problems.
Mark is a 25-year ad agency professional and joined Paulsen in 1995, where he has served in roles including copywriting, producing, creative direction and management. He has been honored with numerous awards for his work. Mark grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota, and graduated from the University of South Dakota. He loves to hunt, fish and pursue other outdoor activities.
VP, Creative Services
Mike leads Paulsen’s creative department, with more than 30 years of experience in advertising and design. Since joining Paulsen in 1991, Mike continues to create attention-grabbing, effective and award-winning campaigns, including high-profile work for Kubota Tractor Corporation.
A talented illustrator, Mike’s portfolio includes editorial cartoons for Outdoor Life magazine, widely-recognizable illustrations for SC Johnson’s Raid® products and a popular logo for national extreme-candy brand Mega Warheads. Most recently he’s taken his talent to the streets, creating chalk art in downtown Sioux Falls.
VP, Finance / HR
Jane oversees all of Paulsen’s budgets, financial management and analysis, human resources, office operations, purchasing and building maintenance. Her expertise has helped Paulsen attain and maintain financial stability and strength and continued growth.
During her 37-year accounting and office management career, Jane has developed a reputation for no-nonsense organization and unflinching attention to detail. Before joining Paulsen in 1996, Jane handled books for Pump ‘n Paks in South Dakota and Iowa. She grew up on a farm east of Salem, South Dakota, and was followed everywhere by a pet calf and a pet lamb (seriously).
Thane joined Paulsen in 1979, working alongside his father, the firm’s founder, until his father’s death in 1987. At that time he became company president — a position he held until handing over the reins to Greg Guse in November 2008.
Thane works with the Paulsen management team and oversees staff recruitment and development. His proven ability to build and maintain a strong, growing, profitable business continues to drive the company forward. Thane graduated from South Dakota State University and will happily talk sailing with anyone who asks.
VP, Client Services
Marcus provides strategic direction and guides relationship management for all client accounts in addition to supervising the account service and account activity teams. His organizational skills, attention to detail and insistence on accuracy ensure that clients receive outstanding quality in every aspect of their relationships with Paulsen.
Since joining Paulsen in 2005, Marcus has risen through the ranks and helped grow key agency accounts. Marcus graduated from the University of Sioux Falls and grew up on a farm near Broken Bow, Nebraska.
As an experienced account specialist, Jordin provides strategic direction and implementation of client projects across all departments at Paulsen. She manages extensive campaign integration on behalf of clients and is well versed in digital initiatives and content strategies. Jordin acts as an advocate for her clients by hearing their needs and coordinating agency solutions on their behalf.
Jordin grew up in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and graduated from Augustana College. She is maddeningly well organized and uses spreadsheets whenever possible, even for personal tasks.
As an account specialist, Tori excels in providing excellent service, juggling multiple projects and keeping her cool. Prior to joining Paulsen as a client service manager, Tori handled marketing for over four years at CHR Solutions in Sioux Falls.
Tori grew up in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and graduated from Saint Cloud State University with a bachelor’s degree in advertising and marketing. She spent summers on her grandma’s and uncle’s farm, where she rode horses, climbed on hay bales and participated in kiddie rodeos, which involved activities such as riding sheep.
A native of Warner, South Dakota, Jenny helps clients find marketing solutions and enjoys providing responsive, friendly service. A highly-honored graduate of Dakota State University, Jenny did her internship at Wheat Growers (a Paulsen client) in Aberdeen, where she says she fell in love with agriculture.
Jenny also worked as an account executive at a printing company before joining Paulsen, so she understands print production backwards and forwards. She’s delighted to combine her marketing and management double major with her passion for ag with the team at Paulsen.
Account Activity Manager / Print Buyer
As Sarah’s complex title implies, she’s skilled and versatile. In addition to moving jobs through from account service to creative, she handles all of Paulsen’s printing, mailing and production.
Sarah’s background is in print production; she was previously with ImageNation Graphics Printing and Pine Hill Press before joining Paulsen in 2006. She graduated from the University of Sioux Falls with a BA in business administration, marketing. Sarah grew up on a farm near Rosholt, South Dakota, and won a 4-H purple ribbon for her Yum-Yum Brownies.
Account Activity Manager
As client service manager at Paulsen since 2008, Danita expertly wrangles people and projects to make sure work is done on time and according to specifications – while keeping her cool. Her commitment to quality is a tremendous advantage to Paulsen and our clients.
Danita grew up on a farm near Kimball, South Dakota, where she worked with livestock, cleaned barns and chopped thistles. In 4-H she showed livestock and served as a club officer. In high school and college she was an award-winning athlete. Danita is a graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University and spent several years in nonprofit management before starting in advertising.
At Paulsen, Allyse works with clients and creative staff to help deliver excellent service and marketing solutions to clients.
As the daughter of a swine nutritionist, Allyse grew up in the world of agriculture and enjoyed showing pigs at the South Dakota State Fair through 4-H. She graduated from the University of South Dakota with degrees in business administration and contemporary media and journalism. She previously worked in the marketing department of CSI Medical in Sioux City, Iowa.
As a client service manager, Hannah facilitates communication and coordination between clients, account service and creative staff.
Before joining Paulsen, Hannah was a marketing associate at Ernst Capital Group in Sioux Falls. Hannah earned a bachelor’s of business administration from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. She grew up in Sioux Falls and spent many happy hours as a child on her grandparents’ farm near Letcher, South Dakota. She played tennis very competitively in high school and college. Her license plate reads: H82Lose.
Media Group Director
Kristi heads up Paulsen’s media department, overseeing media strategy for our clients and vetting and recommending evolving trends and technologies. Since starting at Paulsen in 1995, she has proven to be an expert leader, planner, strategist and negotiator and has truly become a force of nature in the ag media world.
Kristi grew up on a farm in rural South Dakota and graduated from South Dakota State University. Staff and clients enjoy her sharp mind, direct style and dry wit.
Associate Media Director
A member of Paulsen’s media team since 2009, Lee works with clients to develop media strategies built around campaign objectives. Lee’s creativity, knowledge of digital tactics and ag industry experience bring added value to Paulsen’s clients.
Lee graduated from South Dakota State University and worked for the school as a media accounting assistant following graduation. He grew up in Flandreau, South Dakota, and participated in 4-H. When Lee was a young teen, he was named Grand Champion of Moody County in chicken showing.
Joanie assists the media team at Paulsen with placement, analytics and reporting to clients. Before joining Paulsen, Joanie served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi, Africa, and a sales representative at a large print and media solutions company in Washington, D.C.
She graduated from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, with a degree in business marketing. Joanie grew up on a farm near Parker, South Dakota, where she worked in all aspects of crop and livestock production.
Within Paulsen’s media department, Tom uses his expertise in analytics to craft strategies, evaluate trends and measure performance for our clients. He is Google Analytics and Google AdWords certified.
Tom graduated from South Dakota State University, where he majored in advertising and served as advertising manager of the Collegian. He went to high school in DeSmet, South Dakota, where he was a captain of the football team. As one of the few Paulsen staff members who plays on all of Paulsen’s athletics teams, Tom is known as a fierce but friendly competitor.
Public Relations Director
Bryan brings Paulsen clients 30 years of professional experience in media, communications and public relations, with an emphasis in agriculture and politics.
He began his career as a reporter, anchor, assignment editor and news director at KELO-TV and KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls, and was an assignment editor and segment producer for CBS News Northeast Bureau in New York. Upon returning to South Dakota, he served as press secretary and statewide staff director for Congressman Tom Daschle. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Bryan is a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild, which means he gets to watch award-winning films before everyone else.
Associate Creative Director
Kristie is one of the region’s top commercial artists, with numerous high profile branding, marketing and promotional campaigns under her belt. Her superb design sense and strategic thinking help our client work break through the clutter and get results.
A native of Malcolm, Nebraska, Kristie attended Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska, and joined Paulsen in 1997. She won her first communications award in kindergarten as part of a statewide safety poster contest – and has won hundreds since. Kristie can make virtually anything by hand and from scratch; her Halloween costume creations are legendary.
As an art director, Jon works on creative and design for a wide range of agency clients. He joined Paulsen in 2005 after working at ImageNation, a printing company in Sioux Falls.
Jon graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls with a bachelor’s degree in art. He grew up in Alaska and began his graphic design career in high school, doing ad layouts for the Petersburg Pilot newspaper. Jon helps his in-laws on their farm near Centerville, South Dakota.
With over 20 years of ad agency experience, Clara Jacob has worked in New York, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Sioux Falls. At Paulsen she serves as creative director, writer and web content strategist.
Before joining Paulsen, Clara was creative director at HenkinSchultz Communication Arts and associate creative director at Osborn & Barr Communications, where she led creative development for major ag industry clients. She has won hundreds of advertising awards. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Clara graduated from Vassar College and earned a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Goddard College. The way to her heart is through Scrabble.
Voon has over 15 years of experience as an art director at several agencies including Osborn & Barr and Brighton, both in St. Louis, and has been responsible for numerous award-winning campaigns for high profile ag clients. His experience, creativity and fine design sense are deeply valued at Paulsen, where he works on high-profile client accounts.
Originally from Malaysia, Voon earned a BFA in communication design from Kuala Lumpur College of Art and an MFA in advertising design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Although Voon has not lived on a farm, his mother grew up on a rubber tree plantation where she collected the liquid from trees before going to school in the morning.
Katie puts her tremendous creativity, energy and tenacity to work on some of Paulsen’s largest accounts. Previously Katie was media relations executive and copywriter/editor at AKC Marketing in Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked exclusively with ag clients.
A Des Moines native, Katie graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in communications studies and minors in English and advertising. She has always had a passion for language and has kept a journal since fifth grade.
Lead Content Developer
An accomplished video and photography storyteller, Derek creates a wide range of content that supports our clients’ brands. His passion lies in transforming concepts into compelling visual communications.
Derek’s background includes working with top brands such as Krugerfarms.com, Under Armour, Wigwam, California Waterfowl and Habitat Forever, as well as media outlets in the outdoor recreation industry. He also worked at a large-scale farming operation where he unloaded dryer bins, maintained buildings and helped assemble new farm equipment for a local dealership. Derek attended South Dakota State University and Southeast Technical Institute and grew up just outside Redwood Falls, Minnesota, where he spent summers on his grandparents’ farm.
Lead Web Developer
A Paulsen employee since 2004, Tom develops websites and apps for clients using a variety of coding languages. He was previously a web developer with a digital agency, where he developed sites and handled all promotional materials.
Tom was born in Springfield, Illinois, and grew up in Washington, D.C., Denver, Sacramento and Pierre, South Dakota. He graduated from Northern State University with a bachelor’s degree in art and is a self-taught web developer. He married a farm girl and regularly spends time at his in-laws’ farm near Beresford, South Dakota.
Technical Lead / Front End Engineer
Paul works alongside the creative team to develop content-driven websites and interactive web applications. He also explores future technologies and digital solutions for Paulsen and our clients.
Paul grew up in Monument, Colorado, where he rode and cared for horses. Before joining Paulsen, Paul owned a small business. He graduated from the University of South Dakota and, because he’s something of a genius, taught himself how to create websites. Paul telecommutes from his home in Palmer Lake, Colorado.
Interactive Designer / Front End Developer
With his digital knowledge and graphic design skills, Ryan is the link between Paulsen’s interactive team and art department. He brings extraordinary creativity, talent and expertise to Paulsen’s clients.
Ryan graduated from South Dakota State University with a BS in graphic design. He worked as an interactive designer and developer at Blend Interactive and several other companies before joining Paulsen. Ryan grew up in Sioux Falls where he learned nothing about farming, but a lot about eating and about grilling, which is a specialty of his.
With six years at Paulsen, Nikki is an accounting whiz who helps keep the numbers adding up and balancing out. She enjoys the challenge of accounting, which she likens to solving puzzles.
Nikki has a degree in business administration from Colorado Technical University in Sioux Falls. Prior to joining Paulsen she was assistant manager for 11 years at DD Inc., in Sioux Falls, a retail food service outlet, where she handled multiple responsibilities.
Tara possesses valuable expertise in project planning, organization, management and implementation – along with versatility. Consequently, she helps with numerous efforts, including new business, internal programs, digital, account service and HR. She’s truly a Tara-of-all-trades.
Before joining Paulsen in 2009, Tara handled marketing at the Mettler Center in Champaign, Illinois. She graduated from the University of South Dakota with a BS in business administration, marketing. Tara grew up on a farm near Alpena, South Dakota. She enjoys taking her children back to the farm to ride on the trucks and tractors with her father.
Director of First Impressions
With a wide variety of career experiences, Elise greets guests and callers with professionalism and friendliness.
Elise grew up just outside Lennox, South Dakota, lived in Wyoming for many years, and recently returned to live in the house where she grew up. She attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Her grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins were farmers, and she spent a great deal of time on farms as a child. Elise is also an amateur photographer.
