The Importance of Publicly Supporting Ag

November 7, 2016

Your cooperative is uniquely positioned to advocate for agriculture in your service area. And your members look to you to advocate on their behalf to a consumer audience that is often critical of agriculture.

Presenting the farmer’s point of view to consumers is extremely important for the future of agriculture. One of the worst-case scenarios can occur when people who don’t understand agriculture create regulations that hamper farmers.

Studies show that building trust and highlighting shared values is key in getting past consumer distrust. Doing your part lets your members know you’ve got their backs.

What can you do to show your support for ag?

  • Find local speaking opportunities for your members, leadership and staff.
  • Write opinion pieces for local newspapers and websites.
  • Use your own social media channels to express your support.
  • Let local media know that your co-op is an authority on helping consumers understand agriculture and provide story suggestions.
  • Create an educational campaign using print, radio, billboard, social media, public relations and digital tactics.
  • Represent farmers at consumer-focused events in larger cities, such as health fairs or sports tournaments.
  • Challenge members and employees to reach out to influencers or non-farmer friends to discuss agriculture.

These are just a few of the many ways you can work to educate consumers about agriculture.
