On-Farm Research Site for Soybean Growers Launched

September 12, 2017

Paulsen worked with the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension and the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council (SDSRPC) to create a web app for the South Dakota Soybean On-Farm Research Program.

This farmer-led and initiated research program gives soybean growers an opportunity to conduct research on their own farms and access research from all grower participants statewide.

The new site, launched in August 2017, allows farmers to easily share their data and navigate local test results.

The Paulsen team built this sophisticated tool after meetings with SDSU Extension and SDSRPC to understand the best way to communicate the data gathered from test plots across the state.

Previously, the data was collected by SDSU Extension, then printed, bound and sent out to the farmers who participated in the research. Now all farmers in the state have access to the test strip data and results, providing information to help them make more efficient management decisions.

The app interface allows farmers to collect data in the field. Once SDSU researchers review, compile and analyze the data, the reports and visual data images are added to each test strip’s report.

Paulsen programmed the interface to allow users to sort the test data by criteria such as county, soil type, seed brand, tillage practice, fertilizer, fungicide, herbicide or any one of more than 25 factors that affect yield.

The reports show elevation maps of the test strips, charts of the rainfall and temperature for the season and a wide variety of sorting criteria, methodology and results with discussion points.

This data is the most current unbiased and verified third-party research available to South Dakota farmers. Currently, data has been added from 2014 to 2016.

Producers can sign up to participate in future trials on the website, as well.
